Pigmentation

Skin discolorations are frequent disturbances of the skin color. In some cases they are congenital - from birth - while in others acquired - mainly caused by UV light which is harmful for the skin. The pigment which is found in the skin, called melanin, is protecting us from UV radiation. The more sun a person is exposed to, the more harmful rays the melanin is blocking, resulting in a sun tan. Skin discoloration is associated with the abnormal work of the melanin. When excessive, it is known as hyperpigmentation; while when lacking, it is known as hypopigmentation.

Congenital skin discolorations are often incurable, while those that are acquired because of various factors (such as the UV rays of the sun as described above) may be cured and are usually preventable.

When we begin to treat pigmentation, we should start by using creams with SPF 50. Since hyperpigmentation can occur on different depths of skin, laser therapy is a very good tool to remove it. Due to the process of selective photothermolysis, the laser would only treat the pigmented skin without damaging the tissues around.

After the treatment, the treated discoloration may become even darker; which will gradually fade due to the exfoliation process. Laser treatments should be done every 6 to 8 weeks; while more frequent treatments may be required to treat pigmentation which occurs deeper within the skin. The number of laser sessions and their frequency is selected individually for each patient.

The laser treatment for hyperpigmentation is very effective and eliminates most discolorations, but we need to remember that it is only eliminating the effects, not the cause and it is always advisable to use sunblock as a prevention measure.
